Harlextan Afghan Hounds - Breeding ( Brief Outline )

Top Breeders in the UK for the year of 1992 - Winners of over 55 CC's & Green Stars, over 60 Res CC's & Res Green Stars - Owned or bred 9 UK Champions - Numerous CC winning dogs - and more than 25 Kennel Club stud book entries, as well as many Crufts class winners.

Harlextan Afghan Hounds were established in 1969 when our first Afghan Hound was bought from the 'Davlen' kennels of Ford & Barnes. Born in February 1969, she was sired by 'Tartu of Davlen' out of a bitch bred by Monica Booth-Thomson, called 'Goldfinger of Sacheverell' - it was 'Harlextan Tamara' who produced our first litter of 17 afghan puppies! 'Tartu of Davlen' was a 'UK Ch Takabbor Tiaga' son whilst later on our Takabbor bitch was whelped out of Ch Takabbor Tiaga's sister ' Takabbor Tiamora' - thus creating the link lines for the Harlextan Hounds that followed.

It was a year later in 1970, when our foundation bitches were bought from the Takabbor kennels of Barbara Etheridge, that we seriously embarked on a breeding programme based on 'Carloway' and 'Horningsea' lines - famous throughout the world of Afghan Hounds. This foundation bitch called 'Takabbor Joao' was mated to Monica Booth-Thomson's 'UK Ch Sacheverell Zukwala' ( the breed CC record holder in his time ), and produced our first home bred champion called 'Ch Harlextan Dick Deadeye' - born December 1973. ( Named after the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta character - and not the other cowboy ! ).

The next significant litter was the mating of 'UK Ch Sacheverell Zukwala' to our 'Takabbor Abaddon' daughter 'Harlextan Mad Margaret' out of the red 'Takabbor Aquamist' - producing 'UK Ch Harlextan Mad Miranda' S.B.I.S. ( The trend of putting the word 'Mad' in the names of some of our afghans was reserved for those puppies that we thought of as future potential winners ). When Miranda was mated to 'UK Ch Karnak Shamrock' she produced the top winner 'UK & Ire. Ch Playfere Petticoat Wag at Harlextan' - 16 CC's, 5 Green Star Majors, 9 Res CC's, Multi Specialty Best in Show winner.

'Harlextan Mad Margaret' was mated in 1978 to 'UK Ch Amudarya Shalar' producing the typey 'UK Ch Harlextan the Mad Nun' below. Read up about UK Ch Amudarya Shalar - who is presently the UK Afghan Hound Stud Dog record holder - and the link is on our resources and links page.

At the height of her show career, 'UK & Ire. Ch Playfere Petticoat Wag at Harlextan' was retired for maternal duties and produced the most significant and record breaking litter so far produced by Harlextan Afghans. She was duly mated to 'UK Ch Saxonmill Black Currant' ( Top stud dog in 1991, 1992, & 1993 ) and gave birth to nine typey generic black & tans. One was sold as a pet and the remainder to show homes - all of them multi Championship show winners. Four went on to become UK Champions, an Irish/UK Champion and an Australian/UK Champion. ( At the current count there have only ever been three litters of Afghans in the UK producing four and five champions ). It was later on when Jackie Harnett emigrated to Australia that 'Delbert' became 'UK & Australian Ch Harlextan the mad Mullah'
